
At the outset, hardened steel was sold in the US under various brand names like "Allegheny metal" and "Nirosta steel". Indeed, even inside the metallurgy business, the name stayed disrupted; in 1921, one exchange diary called it "unstainable steel". In 1929, preceding the Great Depression, more than 25,000 tons of tempered steel were made and sold in the US yearly.
